The Carn Mor Dearg Arete
The CMD Arete is, without doubt, the most rewarding walking route on the Ben. The approach trek takes you up past the magnificent North Face and up to the summit of the Ben's neighbouring Munro (a Scottish mountain over 3000 feet high), Carn Mor Dearg, from which the arete takes its name.
On descending from the summit of Carn Mor Dearg, the route soon picks up the narrow ridge curving round and up to the simmit of Ben Nevis. From here, weather permitting, the views across to the Ben are magnificent as is the route which soon becomes a narrow, rocky ridge on which the use of hands is occasionally required. Once across the arete, a steep clamber up a rocky slope takes you to the summit.
The arete is a strenuous and demanding day and requires a very good level of fitness. The average time for the entire route is around 10 hours.
